Instructional Strategies That Work: Student Goal Setting
All K-5 students should complete their goal setting this week. Goal Setting correlates well to our October Monthly Happy Habit: "Be Proactive, You're In Charge".
The research shows that students who are involved in their own academic goal setting outperform those who do not feel they have any control or investment in their own achievement.
Campbell, D. J., Koufteros, B. & Foo, Y. (2001). Goal-setting, Competition and Performance: Some Singaporean and American Similarities, Research and Practice in Human Resource Management, 9(2), 3-26.
The results of this study parallel the findings of Study 1, in that competition and goals enhanced rather than depressed performance. Specific, difficult goals resulted in higher levels of performance than easy or moderate goals; and individuals in the Competitive situation significantly outperformed individuals in the Non competitive condition across all goal conditions. Further, in terms of accounting for the results, the questionnaire findings also replicated Study 1. Individuals in the Competitive condition had higher levels of intrinsic motivation; their self efficacy was higher; and they reported higher levels of concentration than those in the Non competitive environment. Finally, individuals with difficult or moderate goals in the presence of competition perceived more anxiety than those with easy goals, which appears to make intuitive sense.
Calendar Reminders
~~All students should have time to take advantage of our AR program. Please work it into your schedule, if you have not already done so. What are your students doing when they finish assignments? That's a perfect time to read!
~Don't forget to use Reading A-Z. It is full of wonderful resources which include: leveled readers, graphic organizers, reading research findings, best practice suggestions, running record resources, etc... This site is perfect for your guided reading groups or center work.
~~ Do/Whats should be underway in your classrooms (not K). The goal is to be completing one per week in each content area by the month of October.
~ We will work further on websites this week during faculty meeting. I will not expect you to be updating them until you have the time and support during our meetings to get them going. My goal is that everyone will be indpendently able to update them weekly by the middle of October.

I found the blog message about goal setting interesting and true to the groups I assist. The best resource to help organize my month and keep me informed has been the Calendar of Events--Thanks Shawn. "Tigers on the Roll", pictures and rooms LOOK GREAT!!! The added feature at the top about upcoming blogs-each click is a different adventure. I especially enjoyed the blog from the photographer. Shawn, thanks for the websites.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the article on the Daily 5. We use part of the Daily 5 during centers. It took us about a week to implement the routines and make the anchor charts. It was definitely worth that time. Behaviors and the understanding of the procedures greatly improved. I like having the anchor charts for the students and the teacher to refer to when needed. I have finished reading the Daily 5 and I want to start the companion book, The Daily Cafe.
ReplyDeleteMay I borrow your Daily 5 book?
DeleteI think that the goal setting is important for our students to begin to take responsibiltiy for their learning. I enjoy seeing pictures and things from other classrooms. We don't often get to see things outside our own grade level.
ReplyDeleteI feel that student goal setting is important for all students to take part in. I know my reading recovery students have that goal to read and find which level reading books are AR books so they can take that test. The pictures and learning targets were great to be able to look at. This allows us to see what other kinds of teaching is going on in other rooms.
ReplyDeleteI am a firm believer in ownership. I think that's exactly what students are doing when they set goals for their learning. They have to feel they own (and control)their goals. We all feel that way don't we? I feel our students are more aware of the expectations placed upon them and how to accomplish those expecations more than ever before.
ReplyDeleteLove Mrs. Hargett's book boxes!
Student goal setting is very important and works when students understand what they have to know and how to get there. I think that goals must be attainable and meaningful to them so that they can envision their success and want to accomplish more in their learning experiences. Students need to feel like they are important and have a say in what they are to do and learn. This is important to remember when students set goals.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that goal setting is important. This year I've had more success with students learning their multiplication fact beacuse they have specific goals to meet each week. They are actually studying and looking forward to showing me what they know.
ReplyDeleteKeri and I are using many graphic organizers from websites that we're learning about in one of our masters classes...we love that we're learning about this, because we are "focused" on using graphic organizers this year. We are excited to start using A-Z Reading as well!
ReplyDeleteWe really enjoy seeing pictures from other teachers, because it gives us good ideas for organization/activities for our own rooms.
Cym and Keri
I also believe setting personal goals is important both to students and adults. With all the changes this year in preschool, I have had a very frustrating year. Setting short term goals has helped me accomplish things each week. I also enjoy seeing pictures of things others are using in their classroom; it is helpful!!

ReplyDeleteStudent ownership and teacher expectations go hand in hand in increasing student achievement. I believe students will set their goals based on teachers expectations of them. As teachers we need to be aware that students can read us fairly easily and know what we expect from them. Setting high expectations for our students will in turn have them set high goals for themselves. Students can often work well beyond what we expect and what they believe they can achieve. Set high, yet achievable goals for all students.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the pictures from other classrooms, we need more of those each week!
